In Public Key Cryptography, there are two sets of encryption-decryption keys. One set of the key is Public and the other set is Private. A person's Public key is well published key and is known to the world, while his private key is known only to the person himself. When somebody (say user A) wants to send a message to any other person (whose public key published, say user B), user A would encrypt his message (that he wants to send to user B) with user B's public key and send it to B. B can decrypt this message using his private key. Similarly, if user B has to authenticate himself as the sender of any message, he can encrypt the message using his private key, and the recipient can decrypt this message using user B's public key.
Public Key is the key which is known to everybody, while Private key is the key known only to the User himself (to whom it belongs). PGP is an example of public key cryptography.
